Safe as houses Derrick you fine old fella.
Just as an intro, I just watched the helvetica movie that Sally's been getting all excited about and i loved it. I can't wait to be in a design team, following trends and styles relating to times and generations and art movements. Not only that but then making products identifying to it and replicating such styles/uses for a reason. Ahhhhh. I can't wait to be one of the old men getting all flumoxed by serifs, and 'excited as much as other get excited by women's bums'. Genius quote.
I really enjoyed today. So much so that i got my shake on. I always seem to shake when i'm enjoying a particular piece of work. Whether it's from it coming together well from what was nothing or just seeing things progress well, for some reason i shake. I was like an epileptic. Granted it was fiddly work bu meh. I enjoying being nervous and excited a the same time.
It was basically a one day task to make two pictures, landscape and figurative, out of just paper. Details were said such as no prints or anything like that and it was more about relief/texture and shape than tone. I did manage to sneak in a bit of music score though. Hehe. For my first pic i did Richard Whitely. The legend. I'm glad i chose this as it was lighthearted and humourous to start the day off and set me in a good mood cause everyone that saw it was giggling along. I enjoy putting it all together even though i felt confined by not having my big letter collection that i've got with the inside grey tones shapes things or being able to use any kinda of paint or text. Breaking out of my comfort zone i guess you'd say. I didn't particularly do any layering other than tissue over brown paper (which i then pulled apart for lines. got to remember that technique.) on the Richard piece which left it rather flat and dull after I'd got over the intial humour of it. I did enjoy making his glasses from masking tape though. Was more like sculpting than collaging!
For the second one I chose bland block of flats but wanted to try the Zaha Hadid relief and raised style. I don't feel it worked as well as hers because i didn't plan any of it and the detail and accuracy of hers make the raised and sunken parts stand out a lot more than my folded card. I was egining to get irrate with it looking more like a model than a relief so I angrily started to just push forward and do new things to it without tihnking too much and it ended p getting quite abstract in the way perspectives were all curled around each other. I really really liked this in the end and you can't see the depth too well from the photo so I'll try and upload multiple angles later but the small little parts that came into themselves like masking tape for lit windows, little lampost and bin etc really pull it together into a certain kinda of style. I want to develop this alot more as I felt very satisfied with having spent a hour or so on each one and having something quite solid to look at with mor than one flat straight off appearance.
Felt a bit like Stephane in science of sleep where he's got all the things like cars and guns made out of bog roll tubes and cardboard. Hehe.
Off to bed now though me ol mucker after a very productive and rewarding day I feel.
Night night.
