Tuesday

Another day another dollar.
Well, not even that cause I'm still bloody skint.

Today was a bit bizzare. Went in all happy with my sentences made from the long-winded and quite frustrating way described in the brief for the poppy project yet we didn't get asked about them OR use them all day. But stupid to demand a deadline when people don't checkup on it. I've been noticing that a lot lately.

Main event though was a one-day project again on idea generation for advertising. We began with a word, which we had to depict without using the title. Our's was 'Cif bathroom cleaner' (all of the words were products). We printed and cut out pictures of a bathroom, sea (C), eye (I) and a letter F aswell as other things like a lime and then a scale for, obviously, limescale. We then handed it over and we got our sheet from another group and it was impossible to decipher it. After an hour and a very lovely cooked breakfast from the uni bar we ended up settling on Bosch's EPS braking system. Made perfect sense. Got a few design ideas down and at twelve (keeping in mind we finish at four) Sally came over and looked very bemused. Smart car. Not bloody bosch. Sooo we redid it all and although we did kinda split up as a group i think we worked okay. It was me, Tom, Megan and Laura. Me and Tom kinda got stuck into it computer wise but Laura and Megan not being like that did stuff by hand. Long story short, came up with a few designs for advertising scheme based around the word smart (advert with simply - IQ 190) underneath a picture of the smart car, but then some more developed ideas around guerilla advertising such as filling a car park block with smart cars and using that for video and picture ads or live guerilla advertising by painting in a parking space the outlines of a smart car to demonstrate it's size difference to other cars. I thought our designs worked well as a set and were quite strong so came away feeling a little pride in what we'd done even though I'd been thinking i was using valueable sketchbook time by doing these projects that don't even relate to our briefs that we have. It's quite exhausting too to generate the ideas for such things and for it just to be a dead end that pretty much stays as is when you leave uni. Would be nice to develop it but other than a self directed piece of portfolio filler i can't imagine the use of it. Yes yes it has certain skill building things like teamwork and yadda yadda but we're at uni now, if you can't work in a group or find interraction difficult then you really need to take a year back. Especially if you're doing a degree with 'communication' in it's title. But yeah. Nice day but just a bit de-energising when right now I need all the energy I can muster.

I keep coming so so close to ripping the pages out of my shitty a5 sketchbook because it's size pisses me off no end but it wouldn't really do any good so i'll just have to make do and fill it as I can and drop my organisation pedanticy.

Note to self: work in a4. maybe use a hole punch and ripp the clippers out of a folder to bind it. OR leave it loose, tie with string and make a nice sexy box for it to slip into. After it's all done and made of course.
